Nice and flavorful smoke! The nose of the bag is prodigiously Latakia. I just can't say enough about this tobacco except, try it for yourself, it is pure heaven!!! I think I have hit the same result as the Dolly record. But on the whole, about as delicate as a horse pistol in the ribs and a genteel invitation to walk the plank. I can taste it from time to time, not in a nutty burley taste but more of a vegetative way. Although there is reportedly 70%+ Latakia in this blend, it is smooth and satisfying with addition of other tobaccos. Nicotine and body are mild, but the taste is medium/strong. Pack it in a small bowl, because if you smoke too much of it, it will overwhelm your taste buds and you will be racing to the finish line. Like most lat-bombs the nicotine isn't noticeable at all, but the flavor is huge. I have started using the cigar cutter method of preparation (As shown on the SPC blog) and find that it makes the smoke quite a bit smoother. Perfect moisture content out of the tin for breaking a piece off the cake and stuffing. I got hints of this flavor throughout the bowl and I must say, I like it! Yes, the Latakia is very present but the flavor is so much more: smoky, sweet, tangy and a light pungent flavor on the end. Theres a topping on this caramel, prune cant place it, but theres definitely a topping. And third it is a fun to work with kake/plug. Pirate kake has that nutty burly and the sour orientals in the background of a sea of Latakia. As Devil's advocate, this is the best contemporary Latakia based English I've smoked barring my ancient faves: Sullivan's 00 & XX blends from 50 years ago. If I could describe this blend in one word it would be creamy. This is a real acquired taste. I truly enjoy reminiscing on the flavor and the smokey smell in my moustache well after my bowl has been finished. Even then it's a very nice smoke. Update 01/19/06- One thing that wasn't put in my original review is that Pirate Kake is a wonderful DGT tobacco, in fact sometimes I think I prefer to smoke it after a few hours left in the pipe. If I had a preference I would add a stoved Virginia to this blend to round it out and add richness to it. Not much to say beyond that. For me, this is my favorite Lat. About mid bowl it seemed to mellow out and I did get some nice sweet notes. I found it to be an excellent blend. The smell in your tin is strongly smoky, as you would expect. I will say I like it, a lot but this is not a tobacco that you need to ponder. I could very well see pirates smoking this out of their clay pipes as they flew the Jolly Roger. It is far from being monochromatic though, which I will get to in a second. I'm also starting to appreciate exactly how smooth Pirate Kake is relative to how much Latakia it contains. This is not a tobacco for the neophyte but for the latakia fiend who wants full-bodied spice, depth and complexity in their smoke. The bars rub out easily enough, and the moisture content is almost right for smoking straight out of the tin, though 20 minutes of drying time doesn't hurt. Another winner from C&D. I don't have any problem smoking this. I had it in a plastic bag that was inside a bail jar. If you have tried and liked 10 to Midnight, you will love Pirate Kake. Flavor wise, it's not as strong as one might expect and I'd say the nic level is medium. As others have mentioned, Pirate Kake would probably blend very well with FVF, or other sweet, full bodied, predominately English or Virginia blends. This stuff is the bomb. When smoked immediately after opening the package, the aroma becomes watery, so it is best to let it dry. But what does come as a surprise, even though this packs a heady punch of smokiness, there's still a small amount of room for the nutty Burley and woody Oriental's; the Burley more-so. Pipe Used: A bunch because it's a go to blend for me. Burns well, I like to dry it a bit but its okay not, just a little more moisture in the bowl than Id generally like. Definitely not an all-day thing, as it would become boring. I had a very tough time finding any other flavor to come through from the Burley or Turkish tobaccos. We all know that to us Cyprus is famous for its Latakia, but I must wonder if this one is not prepared over orange wood fires (orange orchards being another forte of Cyprus). I still rate it at three stars, and worth your consideration if you're into heavy English blends. i have found this one to be better if smoked only from time to time, and not as a good daily smoke, as more than one bowl in a day leaves the mouth unable to taste anything else for several hours. I find it starts to mellow out a little after six months so I keep a stock on hand for aging. So I went ahead and ordered it. I can see why some like this alot, and some who would never smoke it more than an initial bowl. I like to smoke upon occasion - not something I break out often but when I do I really enjoy it. Easy smoking. I get wood smoke, earth, leather, & savory meaty bbq notes from the latakia, which is quite robust, but also well supported by a good bit of floral sweetness & nice incensey notes. That being said, it is still something to go into with your eyes open. 4 stars. I enjoyed it immensely and it really fed the itch for something different.
